Embroidering Time

In the hushed corridors of the A&S Chronora headquarters, nested in a historical building of Downtown Beirut, the threads of time weave through an ensemble of poetic botanical sculptures. The work of Lebanese artist Rumi Dalle (b. 1989), these are islands floating in space, inviting visitors to reflect on the convergence of nature and temporality.

A&S Chronora has continuously pursued a mission to support local artists who share, and reflect on, the company’s values: in this case, a dedication to sustainability and a deep interest in reflecting on the notion of time and one’s heritage. Commissioned by A&S Chronora, Dalle embarked on a journey to infuse greenery into the entrance of its corporate offices, with audaciously subtle project that resonates with intensity in the Lebanese context, symbolising the resilience of the country and the perpetuity of hope, as well as a desire to turn to one’s roots.

Dalle gives a second life to plants indigenous to Lebanon, which she procures already cut, preserved, and dried. Purposefully employing stems and spheres reminiscent of threads and beads used in embroidery, she fashions botanical three-dimensional tapestries. She draws a parallel between her painstaking artistic process and the organic growth of nature, crafting her sculptures with no preconceived plans. Instead, she gives into intuitive and patient construction.

“I believe my concept is truly about finding a parallel between time and nature, between my process and how nature takes its time to grow, and the process whereby we embroider these natural elements to create an artwork.” Rumi Dalle

The plants, dyed in hues reminiscent of the Lebanese natural landscape — green, blue, red, and yellow — transform into deceptively soft shapes evocative of continents on a map. Their form shifts as one draws near, conjuring the ethereal beauty of coral reefs. The sculptures beckon visitors to embark on a journey where the hands of the artist and nature entwine, creating a botanical ode to the ages. Upon entering the building, one is prompted not only to contemplate but also to enjoy a multisensory experience involving touch and even smell. The delicate interplay between the five senses, the concept of time, and artmaking becomes a natural tribute to values dear to A&S Chronora.
